On January 25th 2022, Ava Boike became the girls all time career leading scorer for Genesee Christian School. Heading into Tuesday nights match up with Atherton, she only needed 12 points to tie Megan Bement. Megan was a very accomplished player herself and has held this record for a decade. Coach DJ Boike was also the coach for Megan, “Megan was one of the hardest working players I have ever coached “, DJ said.
Ava grew up in the gym, her dad has been coaching youth and varsity boys and girls for 20 plus years and Ava found herself with lots of time to shoot on the side hoops or practice with the older girls. “She’s always been a gym rat. She played pick up with the boys her whole life and always says, yes, if I ask her to shoot or workout.” DJ said. Until it was finally her turn to put that varsity jersey on and begin her journey. Ava joined a team that was full of upper classmen that included her older sister Gwyn, so she was able to ease her way into the rotation. As the season progressed it became harder and harder to keep her off the floor. She finished her Freshman season averaging just over 10 ppg and a total of 221 points, but had been averaging 14-16 the back half of the season. Her Sophomore year picked up right where she left off and a team led by Ava, Gwyn (Sr.), Hannah Dorow (Sr.), Michaela Gonzales (Sr.), Jules Snyder (Sr.) and Grace Ballmer (Jr.) had found themselves in the Regional Finals right as covid hit and shut all sports down. Her Junior season was in jeopardy as covid canceled the start of the season. Luckily they agreed to a shortened season starting after Christmas but that meant there was 5 less games to play. However Ava was determined to make the most of this season as she hit the ground running averaging 26 ppg and 456 total points. Her and Senior teammate, Grace Ballmer, led the team to another district title before losing in the regionals. In a shortened season Ava finished with the second highest single season in GCS history. Looking into her Senior season she needed 214 points to pass Megan Bement in career scoring and needed just 10 games to hit it.
With about half the season remaining her focus is back on to the goals set for this season for the team. “It’s something I’ve had on my mind for the last year or so. Megan [Bement] was on my dads team when I was a kid and I remember watching her play. So it means a lot to break her record. I could have never done this without my teammates. Now that it is out of the way, my mind is back to competing for a District and Regional championship.”, when we asked Ava her thoughts.
Keep an eye on her and her team the rest of this season as she looks to accomplish her team goals and put some distance on her record!
