The Lady Ballers ended 2022 in convincing fashion with a 71-40 win over the Genesee Wolves. The Wolves are led by Senior, Ryleigh Zinn, who has been breaking recordes already this season having scored 43 points earlier this year. “We understood what we were up against. The goal was to contain Zinn and make her take tougher shots.”, said Coach DJ Boike. That is exactly what the Soldiers did by swarming them on defense all night long! GCS was able to get out and run in transition creating lots of fastbreak opportunities which led to their impressive 71 points. Sophomore, Haven Chapman, paced the Soldiers with a new career high 32 points, 16 rebounds, 5 assists, 5 blocks and 3 steals. “Hav was awesome tonight. You could tell she was really locked in and wanted to prove something to herself and others. I’m pretty sure she got the point across.”, said Coach Jake Boike.
The Lady Ballers team has quietly earned their was to a 4-1 record with wins over; Merritt Academy 59-8, Kearsley 59-25, Hamady 29-27 and Genesee 71-40. Their only loss so far coming against Oakland Christian in the first game of the season for GCS. They are led in scoring by Sophomore Haven Chapman at 21.6ppg, Freshman Bella Boike at 7.8ppg, Freshman Violette Derderian at 6ppg and Senior Lainey Brewer 5.4ppg.
This Lady Soldiers team might be the youngest varsity roster in the Genesee County area with only one Senior, Two Juniors, 4 Sophomores and 4 Freshman. With no JV team available it means the young girls have to grow up fast by being thrown into the fire. Luckily they have experienced coaching and a winning culture. Look for this team to continue to improve as the season goes along.
